In March 2019 the New York Times wrote an article titled
“In London, New Cross and Deptford attract the hip”.
Fast-forward seven years and the notion is palpable. With Goldsmiths College in the heart of neighboring New Cross, the area has always attracted a somewhat arty type. Inaugurations of a contemporary art gallery, Bearspace, a D.I.Y art centre, The Old Police Station, and a business incubator dedicated to craftspeople, Cockpit Arts, over a decade ago, were proof that transformation was on the cards.

Later, the hipster seed was sown with places like the Amersham Arms and The Royal Albert undertaking makeovers and the renaissance of atypical eateries such as The Waiting Room (vegan cafe) and Deli X. A wonderful mishmash of diverse culture and vibrant community, today Deptford boasts numerous cafes, bars, art studios and galleries. A deprived area on the borders of gentrification, the latest hotspot is the regeneration of 14 railway arches next to the railway station – Deptford Market Yard. Don’t forget a visit to the legendary market (Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays 9am-5.30pm) for a truly authentic shopping experience

Places
The swankiest place in town, Buster Mantis is a new bar, cafe and restaurant with a creative space that hosts art exhibitions and special events. Full of young blood, the newly renovated arches are home to a number of cool independent shops, restaurants and businesses. Down the road in New Cross, an unidentified shop humbly presents a noble selection of wardrobe staples that admire craftsmanship, simplicity and functionality.

Micro in size, but big in presence, Vinyl not only operates as a coffee shop, gallery and record shop, it also holds gigs and has a licensed bar.
