DJI OM6 or Insta360 Flow, which gimbal should you go for in 2023?

Handheld camera gimbals are the latest boon and gift to the world of cinematic content creation. These contraptions are built to help you get the smoothest and the most pleasing footage out of your smartphone. They allow you to unearth the untapped potential of your very own smartphones. An essential piece of equipment for a vlogger, a mobile filmmaker and a content enthusiast in general. Here we have two of the most debated handheld gimbals in 2023. The DJI OM6 and the Insta360 Flow. Both are truly strong contenders, fighting each other to have a place in your equipment box the next time you decide to go shooting.
Both the DJI OM6 and the Insta360 Flow have similar designs. Although, the OM6 has the capability of holding devices up to 290g in weight and it also has a bigger more ergonomic grip, built especially for folks with sweaty hands or even less grippy hands. This gimbal will surprise you with how well it feels in your hand. When compared to the Insta360, we see how it can be a little difficult to work with a machine that is so difficult to control efficiently. Apart from just the hand feel, the DJI weighs 309 grams coming with a sturdy and solid body, while the Insta360 is slightly lighter than the DJI OM6.
Both the DJI and the Insta360 have an ergonomic build that folds into a more portable form, which will allow you to pack it safely in your backpacks.

If you have been acquainted with professional camera gimbals before in your life, you might know how much of a hassle it can be just to mount the camera onto the gimbal and start recording. Likewise, it had been a similar case for smartphone gimbals. Both the DJI OM6 and Insta360 however, have special, sturdy and reliable magnetic mounting systems. In both devices, you can easily take the phone clamp and attach it to any choice of smartphone, and then attach and detach that to the gimbal in mere seconds just via their magnetic mounting systems. Both the gimbals also have an in-built, extending selfie stick feature. This allows the lengths to increase by 8.5 inches in both the gimbals, so it isn’t a point of worry for either.

The final similarity between both devices is their locking systems once they have been folded in. Both come with a feature of locking in place after you have folded the gimbals into their respective compact forms.
The DJI gimbal has a more professional look with its matte texture and dark grey colour. The Insta360 flow looks like the innocent brother to the contender due to its smoother finish. On one side of the DJI OM6 you can find a wheel that can either be used for manual focus or zoom controls, In front you will find a reliable joystick for more precise pan and movement controls. The Insta360 flow has one small wheel right in front of the device, which controls everything. You can either zoom or change focus by manually moving the outer ring, that has been provided with a grippy surface. To change modes from Auto to either follow, pan-follow or pov you must use your finger to glide over the surface, for this area is touch sensitive. This panel may have some issues working, but a few tries seem to get the job done. The centre of the wheel has a small joystick which will allow you to manually control the aim and panning of your shot.
Both of them have their own native apps available on both IOS and Android and they work equally smoothly.
The OM6 uses ActiveTrack 5.0 to track its subject in live time and similarly, the Insta360 also has AI support to track the subjects in frame. You can trust them to reliably do their jobs in accurately tracking a subject. DJI’s time-tested algorithms and the Flow’s trusted AI can handle almost any subject following scenes in a breeze. They also have trustworthy stabilisation technology to help you have smooth footage even in choppy shooting situations. Human elements can be trusted by both the Gimbals and as for objects, as long as there is a noticeable contrast in the object and the fore and background, the tracking and panning will work flawlessly. You will also be given options to shoot hyper-lapses, timelapse videos, panoramas and slow-motion videos in both.
The Insta360 comes with a built-in tripod whereas you will need to carry a separate attachable tripod attachment for the OM6. The Flow gets the cookie points when it comes to convenience here, but the thing to notice is that the external tripod attached to the OM6 is way more stable and sturdy than the Flow. So just the ease factor cannot decide your shooting options if it won’t help in the situation.
The OM6 has a battery life that lasts 6.5 hours while the Insta360 can run for 12 hours. OM6 has enough to last a shoot comfortably, while the Flow has even more than that. You will have no worries going in on a long shoot with either of these in your bag. The OM6 also locks in at 180 degrees of panning.

Verdict
The smartphone Gimbal market took flight with a sudden craze in the entire content creation community, but it has now died down to a specialised niche product. This means that both the gimbals compared today have been curated for those niche buyers in mind.
Summing up, The Insta360 Flow is a trustable gimbal which is light and has almost twinning features to the OM6. Its smooth finish, small joystick and finicky touch-based scrolls may cause issues for a few people, but overall it is a good bet.
The DJI OM6 comes from a brand that has been trusted in this field for a long time, along with its useful features, compact form factor, and multiple useful features it also has a sleek and professional build which isn’t big enough to cause disturbance but just enough to be ergonomic and comfortable. When compared together, the differences aren’t striking apart from a minimal few, and when the price points are considered, the DJI OM6 comes out as a clear winner and a smarter choice for any content creator or mobile filmmaker who is working on improving their art.
