Fashion perhaps isn’t an obvious bedfellow for social and political discourse, but new magazine Niijournal is making more than a style statement. Part of a wave of young black creatives who are harnessing the power of the image – as the Black Lives Matter activist movement reverberates around the world – photographer Campbell Addy launched Niijournal to explore cultural and global issues surrounding people of colour.

The Central Saint Martins graduate presents readers with provocative journalism and politically charged design and photography. Niijournal is a beautifully presented get-with-it call to interrogate our own identity with well-considered questions. Addy, a Briton of Ghanaian descent, includes short essays, feature articles and photo shoots in the fashion magazine, all tied together with a collection of unconventional faces and places – a brilliant mix of education and empowerment. In a sea of fashion and culture rags touting what’s in and what’s out, here the tone is inclusive, involved and evolved.
