Munsell Color Charts and Books continues the legacy of Albert H. Munsell and his dedication to helping people communicate munsell color easily and accurately. The aim is to provide you with effective soil color tools, tips, and techniques based on Munsell soil color theory. We’re your resource for transforming Munsell color theory into action – whether you’re designing palettes, producing products or conducting color-based analysis.
The fundamentals of colour are based on Albert H. Munsell’s theory of colour:
The way you visually match colour today is the result of Albert H. Munsell’s work nearly a century ago. In fact, modern day colour theory and the mathematical colour system are based on Munsell’s theory of colour. For years, scientists had studied the mechanics of color going as far back as Newton’s early color wheel. But not until A.H. Munsell had anyone combined the art and science of color into a single color theory. His groundbreaking work laid the foundation for today’s computerized color matching systems and enabled a greater understanding of color principles for generations to come. An artist and an educator, Munsell developed his color theory to bring clarity to color communication by establishing an orderly system for accurately identifying every color that exists. Munsell based his system on what he defined as “perceived equidistance” — the human visual system’s perception of color.
Your color is our business
We help you communicate and reproduce color consistently with munsell soil color standard charts developed using Munsell color theory. Produced to the exacting color accuracy that Munsell himself insisted upon, Munsell color standards provide a visual representation of the color you have in mind. With a tangible color at hand, you can more effectively communicate and evaluate color. Whether you’re in government, business or academia, Munsell color theory and standards serve as a reference for a wide variety of uses including color branding;classifying soils, rocks and artefacts charts; grading produce; specifying color based on government standards; learning how color works; and more. Choose a standard color from the Munsell books of color and color sheets or have us develop a custom color management solution for you—giving you freedom to design your own unique color instead of being forced to choose a predetermined color from a fan deck. Everyone perceives color differently. That’s why it is important for anyone involved with the evaluation of color to understand how accurately they actually see color. The Farnsworth-Munsell 100 Hue Test (or FM100 Hue Test) is an easy-to-administer test and a highly effective method for evaluating an individual's ability to discern color. The test requires the use of standardized daylight conditions such as those found in X-Rite’s SpectraLight QC and Judge QC light booths. The Farnsworth-Munsell 100 Hue Test is a global standard that has been used by governments and industry for more than 60 years, the test evaluates and ranks color acuity. It consists of four trays containing a total of 85 removable color reference caps (incremental hue variations) spanning the visible spectrum. Color vision aptitude is detected by the ability of the test subject to place the color caps in order of hue.
The charts are a selection developed for color coding of wire and cable insulation by Electronic Industries Association (EIA RS359-A) for use with electronics components. Latest revisions to order are: EIA-359A 1988 and TIA – 598-C 2005.
EIA color coding charts for the telecommunications and fiber optics industries are also available:
Aqua color coding chart
Aqua single chart for color coding telecom cable and fiber optics.
Rose color coding chart
Rose single chart for color coding telecom cable and fiber optics.

The Farnsworth-Munsell Dichotomous D-15 Test is an abridged version of the 100 Hue Test for screening color vision defects only. The D-15 Test is intended for the detection of color vision defects such as red-green and blue-yellow deficiencies as opposed to color acuity. The test consists of a reference cap and 15 removable chips of incremental hue variation.
